right now at 11:00, it is here, the bay area's busiest weekend of the year, a lot of excitement and headaches as well. good evening, thank you for joining us. it is going to be wild from marina green to golden gate park and almost every point in the city in between. want to show you a live picture of san francisco right now, more than a million people expected to be in the city for a weekend of blockbuster fun. racing, baseball, football,

street fairs and acrobatics. do you like it? san francisco has it if you can get there. we have live team coverage for you on the traffic concerns, with cheryl herd. >> reporter: well, jessica, i can guarantee you these traffic meters won't be available to you in san francisco this weekend. and signs like these are up, there will be delays. check it out. you have been warned. there is a warning out to those who dare to venture onto bay area roads this weekend. parking will be tight and traffic will be a mess. and tonight, people were already trying to avoid it. >> we came from vallejo on the ferry, and now, you know, the last ferry we missed and so we're waiting for the bus. >> reporter: metered parking? forget about it. this weekend, public transportation is the way to go. >> so we decided we wouldn't drive today. maybe it was a bad decision. because in the end, mass transit

adventure took us like two and a half hours to get here from vallejo. >> reporter: that may not be ideal, but parking on saturday and sunday will be unbearable. there will be ways to find parking in the city. and several schools will take advantage of the lots by opening them up for a $25 fee. some areas are already off limits. and don't forget about the traffic. >> it will be very busy. you know, we have fleet week, america's cup, the giants, 49ers. >> reporter: they are playing rivals ucla the same day, and cal is play the 49ers. you better gas up or you could be sorry. >> you need to gas up, you could be blocking lanes, you will need the patrol help to get you out of the way. >> reporter: so the best advice for travel this weekend? >> if you can walk, i would do walking. if you can bike, i would do

biking. if you can drive, i would leave it at home. >> reporter: gary from san francisco has it all figured out. but this will be a spectacular weekend. but try to enjoy it through public transportation. reporting live in san francisco, i'm cheryl herd, nbc bay area news. >> okay, cheryl, i'll be walking with you and gary, thanks for that report. no need to wait for tomorrow. the party has started tonight. both sides of the bay are buzzing here. but i know there is a bit of controversy surrounding the oakland a's playoff tickets, right? >> first take a look at at&t park, all dressed up for the playoffs. the giants are wearing the colors, both sides on either side of the bay are ready for play action and they are expected to spend a lot of money to enjoy it. san francisco lights up with orange pride. >> let's do it again, baby, like

2010. >> reporter: the giants area is big business here. they're preparing for big crowds all weekend. >> we're expecting good crowds, happy people and the giants to win. >> reporter: fans will shell out lots of cash from everything to food, tickets on stub hub, and gear. >> whenever i go on their site, i check to see for inventory. >> reporter: sporting the orange sneakers, adam gould showed up to see the practice. a small but competitive bunch snagged the home balls. when joe dirt is not fishing balls out of the cove, he is tossing pennies in for luck. >> every penny that i've had the last ten years, down at the bottom of the cove. >> reporter: the superstition seems to pay, elsewhere, they're handing over cash for tickets.

greg griffey is out 300 bucks, so far the a's say some 20,000 tarp-covered seats will remain off limits. but fans eager to pay for a spot in the stadium are pressuring the team to make room. lots of people are making money as two bay area franchises are heading into the playoffs, the one loser could be the boss. >> i could be missing work for the game. >> reporter: employees will be fielding sick calls. san francisco is playing cincinnati here tomorrow, and the mayors of both series made a friendly bet. the loser of both series will host a firehouse chili cookoff, and they are confident that mayor ed lee will be visiting san francisco. >> certainly hope so all right, thank you very much jean, and of course, we can't forget the blue angels, the fighter jets will fly again tomorrow. and so the question is will the weather cooperate again with all

of these big events? meteorologist rob mayeda. you need to bundle up if you're heading out to san francisco, we had partly cloudy skies as the jets raced over head. it was wonderful to be out there to see it and hear it. you have the orange there, you can see the patchy fog, the one thing we don't want for the air show is to get visibility lowered by the fog and low clouds. now the satellite is interesting here with the low pressure system offshore. the drier air missing down, we'll see the same tomorrow. however, in the meantime, look what happens overnight. that green you see in the future cast, that is drizzle showing up in parts of the bay area. we head towards tomorrow morning you may see misty skies, before it starts to clear. good news for the outside events tomorrow. but later in theed with, looks like we could see a few chances

of showers. more on the forecast coming up moments from now. >> okay, rob, we'll see knew a little bit, so weather traffic, live coverage doesn't stop on air or on line, you can always follow us on facebook and twitter, #baybigweekend. you will find out allel the events and how to get there. and in the south bay, highway 87 near the hp pavilion, one person is dead, after the hit-and-run. kimberly terry joins us now. kimberly, is highway 87 hope right now? it is opened again, there is one lane closed, we're told it has reopened. that is why we had to move from the tank. they had to open the road back up, after a two-hour investigation after the hit-and-run that happened about 8:30 tonight. california highway patrol says the vehicle struck and killed a

pedestrian, southbound near the park avenue exit. the victim is a san jose man whose identity police are not releasing until his family is notified. no word yet on why this man was on the freeway. the police shut down the westbound julian on-ramp and one lane of i-87 to investigate. but we're told that those since have reopened. police were able to seek two witnesses and at this hour are trying to get a better description of the vehicle involved in this hit-and-run. if you know anything about this accident on southbound 87 just north of park avenue you are asked to call california highway patrol. and of course, we're learn more details and pass them on to you. live, san jose, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. and new tonight, a high school volleyball coach has been ordered to stay off campus. police in lafayette was told that the man was having an

inappropriate relationship with a female student. he coaches at the high school. it is not clear if the girl went to the school. investigators say the relationship had been going on for more than a year. now colusian was working at the elementary school, and now is placed on administrative leave. and a rude awakening, gas prices making another painful jump overnight. 20 cents in some areas. people near los angeles waited in very long lines to get gas at a costco this afternoon. the lines were deep and spilled right onto the street. now triple a now says the state average for a gallon of unleaded is 4.49, the highest in the country. only 12 cents lower than the state record back in 2008. they're on the hunt for a burglar. palo alto police released a sketch of a suspect today spotted leaving the scene of a crime. police say a man that looks like this sketch robbed the home near

arrow head yesterday morning. it was a common approach, the homeowner left the home to run an errand, and the burglar returned. when she returned she noticed a man getting into a black four-door vehicle nearby. so far in palo alto there were 160 burglaries. and searching for burglary suspects, they opened fire after a neighbor confronted them on gulf drive near the intersection of key road. the suspects wearing dark clothing abandoned their silver bmw, and fled. and people feeling frustrated and vulnerable with fewer officers and rising crime. they're asking the city for help. on thursday, they returned to a home broken into, and their life savings gone. they say they spent the last 20

years collecting things they loved. rare jewelry, gold coins, and now all of it gone. >> once inside they went to every single room. >> when four san jose officers arrived to castro's home, they were forced to leave to investigate yet another burglary just down the street. and still ahead here at 11:00, more peanut butter problems and still ahead for the massive recall that still continues to grow. and still ahead, an ending for an undocumented immigrant, threatened with a life-threatening situation. and to blame for a dangerous seat issue. and a little bit of fog approaching san francisco, 50s, 60s outside. but we also have more clouds outside that hint at an increase of showers, possibly late in the weekend. we'll show you the impact on all the weekend plans around the bay area and the seven-day forecast when we come right back.

. hold on to your seats, literally, american airlines was forced to cancel flights, and tonight the fix was on. the problem, loose seats. the airline blames wear and tear, poor design, and possibly spilled soda for causing pins to come out of the assembly which attaches the seat to the cabin floor, the airline says it will be fixed by tomorrow. and under pressure, how people are describing their

current immigration audit. the federal agents are auditing them after receiving complaints about suspected undocumented immigrants working at the stores. because of the audit, they have joined the federal e-verify system which checks the immigration status of all new hires. the company made the announcement. pueblo, if you don't know, has stores all throughout the central valley. after waiting for several years, he finally has been given a second chance at life. tonight, a bay area person is recovering from a kidney transplant. today, jesus navarro proudly showed off his scar, after last week's surgery. there is confusion now on whether or not his immigration status affected his place on the transplant list and whether he was eligible for surgery. his story went viral, prompting an activist from san ramon to

step in and help. >> to get his word out i think the press did a great job to cover his story. and so that made it easy for me to do the rest of the work and show that these programs are available to all immigrants. >> he says anybody working in the united states pays into medicare and pays federal and state taxes and should be entitled to this treatment. okay, pick your players, the gia giants, eagles. >> and even if you're not a sailor, it is still ease to watch america's cup. there is an exclusive look at today's action. >> reporter: hey, thank you, a big weekend here in the bay area also means a big two days of raising the america's world cup series. the fleet racing today saw terry hutchison take a victory, as well as ben ainsley. but the matchup was great work. on a day where we saw natalie

coglin riding with new zealand's team, ben ainsley takes the second week of the round two, cup series, we found the most winning skipper supporting the giants into the post season with the fs logo on his boat. and what looked like victory, it was ruled he had not correctly rounded mark four and thus didn't finish. so thus, the swedish team advances to the finals to take on the crew. the final four and the championship finals of match racing set for saturday on the bay. now keep in mind we will have the fleet finals here right on nbc bay area on sunday afternoon. and saturday, prime time, we'll take you inside all the history and all the things that are making america's cup so intriguing as we head into 2013. with this look on the bay, we'll

the sun was out. didn't feel warm at all. 60 degrees in san francisco, upper 50s, inland, fairfield, starting the area in the 90s, today, mainly 70s inland. we'll see more of this in the weekend. and healthy seabreeze in livermore. and location by location forecast, fleet week tomorrow, clouds starting and breaking up tomorrow afternoon. looks like the blue angels may be starting up low, you could see low action with the blue angels tomorrow. and for the world series, the america's cup, we have temperatures in the 60s, but perhaps the weather is best suited for the wind sail, low 60s there, coming up in the evening, the giants and reds, first pitch just after 6:30. cooler temperatures as we head into the middle innings of the game, dropping into the 50s there. finally, let's head to sunday as

we watch the 49ers taking on the buffalo bills. mi mid-50s, notice we don't have rain drops, but things could change as the upper low mixes things up with the drier air. however, once it crosses the coast, it will add lift to the atmosphere. and very likely, we could see some showers perhaps as we go into monday. but right now, what the future cast is showing us here, drizzle and a few spots for the morning clearing as we go through the afternoon. and by 7:00, as the game gets started at at&t park, we'll see the low clouds streaming back in. a cool evening around the ballpark. the pitchers, around san jose there, you see the fog spilling into the santa clara valley. so a cool weekend out there. temperatures not too bad, just nowhere near the 80s and 90s we had this week. in fact, look at noon, low 60s, things are cool in the bay area to start off the weekend.

mi mid-70s, near san jose, cooling quickly again, the three-day forecast showing well inland, towards pleasantton, we could see mid-70s, leaving a chance of drizzle, a best chance of seeing a few scattered showers and warming update little bit towards the middle part of the week, but it was absolutely awesome, hearing the blue angels, on the flight deck. going over to at&t park, america's cup team coming back in all in the same place. very exciting. >> why did you come back in studio? >> it was getting cold out there, roger. >> you should have stayed out there. >> that was the best place to be. well, coming up, they were lined around the block. the fashionable grand opening right here in the bay area. good morning! wow.

products made in their new mexico facility between march of 2010 and september of this year. that is 240 products that may contain salmonella, in addition to peanut butter and almond butter from trader joes, it could be sold at costcos and other stores, so be careful. trader joes is now linked to salmonella across the country. and receiving steroid shots from a recalled batch linked to the outbreak of meningitis. patients have been alerted that they may have been treated with the contaminated steroid. the contaminated areas are in palmdale among other areas. they have linked at least 40 cases to the illness in other sta states. and covering the giants, who is the most excited sports caster in the bay area? >> we know who he is, henry

welcome back, to nbc bay area, a huge weekend in bay area sports. in fact, no time to waste, let's turn things over to at&t park. >> reporter: we know how dominant matt cain was, not giving up an earned run in the entire playoffs and he will take the mound in game one on saturday against the reds. >> it is definitely an honor, something i'm excited about, you know, throwing game one. it is something i'm trying to stay strong with, even keel, and make a good start. >> he is so consistent, not just his pitching, because you not just his attitude, but he has been through a lot.
